This blog documents the slow slide into chaos that our society is maneuvering (did I say slow? Really, in fits and starts) Some stories are funny, but most can be viewed as terrifying, if you value freedom.

Is this the first implementation of our police state?

Santa Ana, California - A Superior Court judge ruled Tuesday that there is legal justification to keep the Central Men's Jail under medical quarantine - at least for a couple of days - to control a swine flu outbreak.
Judge Thomas Goethals said the "significant medical public health event" in the men's jail is good cause to temporarily suspend constitutional guarantees to speedy trials, preliminary hearings and arraignments for some criminal case defendants.

Rolling Stone Magazine - China's All-Seeing Eye
Police State 2.0 might not look good from the outside, but on the inside, it appears to have passed its first major test.
"Come help us spy!" the Chinese government has said to the world. And the world's leading technology companies are eagerly answering the call.
The global homeland-security business is now worth an estimated $200 billion — more than Hollywood and the music industry combined. Any sector of that size inevitably takes on its own momentum. New markets must be found — which, in the Big Brother business, means an endless procession of new enemies and new emergencies: crime, immigration, terrorism.
China is becoming more like us in very visible ways (Starbucks, Hooters, cellphones that are cooler than ours), and we are becoming more like China in less visible ones (torture, warrantless wiretapping, indefinite detention, though not nearly on the Chinese scale).

OK, UK is TWO steps ahead of us ...
MUSLIM crime victims could gain the right to have their cases overseen by police from their own religion, it emerged last night.
Police in London already give victims the right to ask for a Sikh officer to be involved in an investigation but the scheme could be introduced for other religions elsewhere.

UK Police one step ahead of us - moving to police state
Police have been handed 'Chinese-style' powers to enter private homes and seize political posters during the London 2012 Olympics.
Little-noticed measures passed by the Government will allow officers and Olympics officials to enter homes and shops near official venues to confiscate any protest material.
Scotland Yard denied it had any plans to use the powers.
Assistant Commissioner Chris Allison said: 'We have no intention of using our powers to go in and take down demonstration posters.'
You're (Probably) a Federal Criminal
Federal law now criminalizes activities that the average person would never dream would land him in prison. Consequently, every year, thousands of upstanding, responsible Americans run afoul of some incomprehensible federal law and end up serving time in federal prison.

This is using food as a cover for martial law
* HR 2749 would give FDA the power to order a quarantine of a geographic area, including “prohibiting or restricting the movement of food or of any vehicle being used or that has been used to transport or hold such food within the geographic area.”
[This - "that has been used to transport or hold such food" - would mean all cars that have ever brought groceries home or any pickup someone has eaten take-out in, so this means ALL TRANSPORTATION can be shut down under this. This is using food as a cover for martial law.]
Under this provision, farmers markets and local food sources could be shut down, even if they are not the source of the contamination. The agency can halt all movement of all food in a geographic area.
[This is also a means of total control over the population under the cover of food, and at any time.] See this DailyKos entry.
